Below answers all your questions regarding Diablo II Customs, how to install the, how to use them, and other specific things. Be sure to read it before you attempt to install or run any custom.

What is a Diablo II Custom/Mod?
A Diablo II custom is a patch created by fans that will alter one or more aspect of the game. While there are some that can make players exceedingly powerful, the ones Infoceptor contains are those that offer unique enhancements. These maybe in terms of more balanced gameplay, tougher monsters for a more challenge, new items, enhanced graphics or anything else. While some may make things slightly easier for the player, they are not hacks and cannot be used as hacks.

How do I run a Diablo II Custom?
Diablo II customs come in either the form of a patch_d2.mpq file or a .d2m patch archive. Once a patch_d2.mpq file is moved into your Diablo II directory, Diablo II will used datafiles inside it instead of it's own. This is how Blizzard patch the game, and how players can do. To install:

  • Back up your original patch_d2.mpq in your Diablo II directory. Rename it do patch_d2.bak or something else that can be easily identified.
  • Copy the mpq file from the zip you downloaded into your Diablo II directory.
  • Rename the mpq as patch_d2.mpq
  • Run Diablo 2
To uninstall, simply rename the patch your using to something identifiable, such as harderd2.mpq, and then rename your patch_d2.bak back to patch_d2.mpq.

In the case of the .d2m patch files, you will need to download Darkarchangel's mod manager. This program can be found in our archive of Diablo II Mod Utilities

Can Diablo II Customs be used in Multiplayer?

Can Diablo II Customs be used on Open Battle.net?
Yes, but again only if all players who join your game are running the exact same custom as you are.

Can I use one of my original Diablo II characters in a mod?

You'll find your Rares and other magical items will altered, usually to something less powerful. These items will change back to their original attributes when you uninstall the custom.
