Units of the Scourge: Last Updated 2-6-2002
If one compares Warcraft 3 Races to those of Starcraft, then the undead would be the best match for the Zerg. Their units are mostly weak, but come at a cheap price, and in a few cases cost nothing more than a little mana and a corpse.

Most undead units are melee fighters, and their only anti-air comes in the form of the weak Skeleton Archer. In effect, the Scourge will need to resort to spells to counter threats from above. Thankfully they do have magic aplenty, providing for all three of their spellcasting heroes. The Undead will also need to rely on numbers during siege warfare, much like their Zerg counterparts. The only siege unit comes in the form of Meat Wagon, which requires a corpse with each attack.

Acolyte:

    Weapons: Unknown
    Reincarnations: None
Blizzard has certainly made a lot of changes to the Scourge in terms of the basic peon unit. First it was the Necromancer, then Dredges, now its Acolytes. Acolytes serve as the basic worker unit, and will perform menial tasks such as summoning buildings and harvesting gold. In addition, Acolytes are the only unit that can increase the area that is covered by blight.

1-25-2001: Acolytes no longer generate blight. .

    Special Abilities:

Summon Building Acolytes are the only scourge unit that can summon structures.

Dark Ritual: A Team of up to 5 Acolytes is able to enchant a goldmine so that its contents are automatically siphoned to the player. Once a ritual is cast, the Acolytes most remain immobile around the gold mine to maintain the enchantment. A force field is erected around the mine and the five acolytes. This force field must be destroyed before the acolytes can be harmed. It takes a significant amount of time

Skeleton Warrior:

    Weapons: Saber
    Reincarnations: Skeleton (War1, War2)
Skeleton Warriors are weak melee units, which are meant for cannon fodder more than anything else. They are raised by the Necromancer from corpses, much like the Skeletons were in previous Warcraft Games.

11-11-2001: Skeleton Warriors will now only last a certain amount of time before they crumble to dust (like skeletons in Warcraft 2).

    Passive Properties:

Arcane Decay: After a set amount of time, the magic that binds the Skeleton together will begin to falter. After that, the skeleton's hit points decreases steadily till the skeleton crumbles to dust.

Ghoul:

    Weapons: Claws
    Related Images: [1]
    Reincarnations: Zergling (SC)
Consisting of crudely stitched body parts from dead and decaying limbs, Ghouls are a truly disgusting sight. They all feature a sharp array of teeth and elongated tongues; the site for fresh meat alone can drive these tiny abominations into a bloodthirsty frenzy. Ghouls serve as the lowliest Scourge warrior, raised in mass and used as cannon fodder.

2-10-2002: Beta Unit Stats Included. Ghouls Harvest Lumber twice as fast as Peasants..

1-25-2002: Ghouls no longer merge to become abominations..

    11-17-2001: Ghouls now harvest lumber..

11-11-2001: Corpses that have been consumed by Ghouls can no longer be raised as skeletons. Numerous Ghouls and merge together to become an Abominations..

Harvest Lumber: The Ghouls is the only undead unit that can harvest lumber. They harvest twice as fast as peasants.

    Unit Stats:

    Hit Points Damage Armor Range

Abomination:

    Weapons: Cleaver, Meat Hooks
    Speed: Slow
Pieced together by ambitious Necromancers intent on creating a monstrous war machine, Abominations are the stuff of nightmares. Their body is stitched together from the dead pieces of various foes, resembling grotesque combination of body parts. Stacked to the size of a tree, Abominations possess almost unlimited strength and endurance. Each of its misshapen limbs is armed with either cleavers or hooks. In combat, Abominations can bring all its weapons upon its foe all at once.

    2-5-2002: Unit Stats Updated.

1-25-2002: Abominations are now trained normally, rather than merged from ghouls.

11-11-2001: The Abomination is demoted from hero to unit status. Death and Decay is now replaced by Cannibalize.

Banshee:

The Banshee in the corrupted spirit of a female elf, raised from the dead to compensate the scourge with their deadly wail. They hate living, finding their presence painful beyond tolerance. When engaged in the combat, the banshee is a formidable opponent, able to glide from one place to another at lightning speeds. When faced with overwhelming odds, they can let out a deathly screech, stunning the strong and killing the weak outright.

    1-24-2002: Banshee gains Charm Ability.

    Special Abilities:

Wail of the Dirge: For a small amount of mana, the Banshee can voice a ghastly tune. As long as she keeps singing, the corpses around her will not decay.

Wail of Death: This ability caused all enemy units around the banshee to suffer from massive damage. It is a continuous attack which only ends with the Banshee is drained of mana.

Charm: The target non hero unit becomes charmed, and can be controlled totally by the player with the Banshee.

    Passive Abilities:

Hover: Banshees Hover, and hence are unaffected by certain spells, ie: earthquake.

Shade:

    Weapons: None
    Speed: Average
Shades are the twisted souls of acolytes, create by sacrificing acolytes on the sacrificial altar. Shades cannot attack, and nor have any abilities. However they are permanently invisible and serve as excellent units for scouting, spying and reconnaissance.

    Properties:

Permanent Invisibility: Shades are permanently invisible and do require energy to maintain invisibility.

    Unit Stats:

    Hit Points Damage Armor Range
    210 0 0 -

Necromancer:

    Weapons: None
    Related Images: [1]
    Speed: Average
The necromancers are a cult of humans who've come to worship the power of death. Unraveling these timeless mysteries in an attempt for immortality, they have instead found ways to raise dead from their graves. With the return of Nur'zhul, the once secret cult has emerged as servants, who now obey every wish of the dead, in return for power.

Necromancers have been demoted from hero to unit status and are no longer an essential aspect of the Scourge Economy. However these spellcasters are expert at manipulating corpses, and are the only units that can provide the Scourge with a large skeleton army.

2-11-2002: Skeleton Archers can't be raised anymore. 1-25-2002: Unholy Frenzy Revealed.

    Special Abilities:

Raise Skeleton Warrior: Creates a Skeleton Warrior from a corpse.

Corpse Explosion : Targeted corpse explodes, dealing significant damage to all surrounding units. Similar to the spell of the same name in Diablo II

Unholy Frenzy : When the Necromancer casts this spell on a unit, they go into madness, attacking at a much greater speed than they normally would. However, as a side effect to the frenzy, the affected unit will also slowly loose hit points while the spell is in effect.

    Unit Stats:

    Hit Points Damage Armor Range
    180 0 0 -

Crypt Fiend:

    Weapons: Magic Bolts
    Speed: Average
Steeped in mystery, the crypt fiends are rumored to be elves who turned to darkness after the destruction of their homeland. Long mutated from their original form, Crypt fiends have the torso and head of a man but the body and legs of a deadly arachnid. Living in tune with the creatures of dark crypts, they command the might of spiders and scorpions for the scourge.

2-10-2001: Pit Fiends renamed Crypt Fiends, Web Added.

    Unit Stats:

    Hit Points Damage Armor Range
    330 62-108 1 95

    Gargoyle:

      Weapons: Magic Missiles, Claws
      Reincarnations: None
The gargoyle is the only Scourge unit that is both fast and possessed a means to attack from range. This unit serves of as a skirmisher, able to hurl nasty elemental attacks from the air. Considering the undead in general lacks both speed and ranged attacks, the gargoyle is an invaluable asset to the scourge.

      11-11-2001: Stone form Revealed.

      Special Abilities:

Stone Form: At any time, the Gargoyle can land and turn itself to stone. In this form, the Gargoyle gains the benefits of increased defense, but cannot attack at all. The real advantage though is that Gargoyles in stone form have greatly increased energy and health regeneration rates. A Gargoyle can switch between normal and stone form at will. The Gargoyle must land to turn to stone, and hence will be vulnerable to melee attacks.

    Frost Wyrm

      Weapons: Frost Breath
      Speed: Very Slow
Distant cousins of true Dragons, Frost Wyrms posses neither intelligence nor the power of their bigger brothers. It is these two properties that have made it easy for more powerful Liches to subdue them. Despite this, Frost Wyrms still possess a nasty bite, and terrifying attacks.

      Passive Abilities:

Frost Breath: Freezes target buildings. Buildings that are frozen train units a lot slower.

Flight: The frost Wyrm can fly.
