General Information:

What is World of Warcraft?
World of Warcraft is a Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (MMORPG). In World of Warcraft, thousands of players will have the opportunity to adventure together in an enormous, persistent game world, forming friendships, slaying monsters, and engaging in epic quests that can span days or weeks.

What is a Mass Multiplayer Online RPG?
A Mass Multiplayer Online RPG, MMORPG for short, is a online RPG game that allows up to thousands of people to adventure and interactive in a single game world. This means that instead of in Diablo 2, where you must create or join a new game that supports up to just 8 players, WoW will allow you to log on directly into a game world that contains thousands of players just like you. This means that the game in never static, and there'll be something new each time you log on. MMORPGs are persistent, meaning that your character lives in the world, and the game run completely by Blizzard servers. Examples of MMORPG games available right now include EverQuest and Asheron's Call.

Does this mean WoW won't have single player support?
Correct, World of Warcraft will be playable online only. There will be no Single Player support. However this does not mean you can't adventure alone in the online world.

What's this about having to pay to play?
As is the standard model with most MMORPGs, there will be a monthly fee for World of Warcraft, but Bill ensured us that the fee would go right back into the game in the form of game updates, a round-the-clock support staff, a team dedicated specifically to coming up with new content for the game, and new servers to be added when needed.

How Much is it going to cost me to play?
Blizzard hasn't released an official figure, but it'll probably be similar to current MMORPGs out on the market. So that's around $10 US per month.

Argh! Why can't it be free?
Maintaining a MMORPG Game is a complicated process, and is much more costly than a normal Battle.net game such as Diablo II In this case, all the information on different dungeons, monsters, items etc are stored on the server rather than on your hard drive. This means that players will be downloading levels, monsters etc as they play, creating a huge bandwidth that makes server maintenance of Diablo II Realms tiny in comparison.

In addition, Blizzard will be constantly adding new monsters, items and areas into the game, scripting events so that one day you log on, you might be fighting a demonic invasion, while the next you must save the elves from an undead army. All this scripting requires staff, and hence costs. Consider your $10/month contributing to a new mini- expansion each month. Its this sort of active world that allows MMORPG such as Asheron's Call to still be popular today. .

Will there be a Beta Test?
Yes, but its so long of that you don't need to worry about it.

What's the Release Date?
Blizzard does not plan to give out an official release date, but its definitely going to be released after Warcraft 3. Out estimate is sometime around late 2003.

Technical Details:

What's the System Requirements?
Blizzard has not stated an official system requirement, but a decent 3D graphics is mostly lot required. In addition, I'm estimating that a 400 Mhz processor and 96 mb RAM are most likely necessary.

What Platforms will the game be on? Currently its announced for PC only. A Mac version will probably be released at a later date.

Will the game need to pause to load new areas during the game? No, transition between areas is totally smooth, and you want need to wait for a loading screen..

Gameplay:

What are the playable races?
The currently announced ones are Orc, Human and Tauren, there is likely to be many more playable races that's not yet announced, such as elves, trolls and other races features in Warcraft 3

How does combat work in Wow?
Blizzard states that it'll be a 'An action-packed combat system delivers fast, furious combat against multiple opponents'. Pretty vague huh? Whatever the case, Blizzard assures us that combat will be somewhere between that of EverQuest and that of Diablo II. It'll work on a point and click basis, and will be easier to manage and faster paced that current MMORPGs.

In the current version, to attack a monster, you simply click on it once. Your character will then hack at the beast till he's dead. Whenever you hit your enemy, a number for show up in the main screen indicating the amount of damage you did. Much like Diablo II, the life of your enemy is displayed as a bar on the top of the screen.

Is there food in WoW, and do you need to eat it to live?
Yes, there will be food in WoW, but they are not a requisite for survival. Eating an apple or a fish will temporarily increase the rate you regenerate health, and in some cases mana. So when your hurt, munching on a piece of ham does help. You will not suffer any penalties for starving, though.

To what extent can you customize your character?
Each race well feature to base models, one for each gender. From these basic models you can change everything from your hairstyle, skin tone, eyes, clothes etc. Blizzard offers a lot of details, and the game with automatically zoom in when you customize you r facial expression to ensure that no detail is lost.

Can you give a rough description of the interface?
This onscreen GUI consists of many elements and whatever you are doing with the GUI you can always move your character in the world so you'll always be able to change your armour or weapon while still hightailing it away from the approaching hoards of enemies. At the base of the screen small tabs popup inventory, equipped items, and spell windows which you can use to bind hot keys to spells, manage the possessions you are carrying, and equip your character with armor and weapons all with a drag and click interface. Centered between there tabs is the chat dialog box which you can use to interact with your fellow creatures.

To the top left of the screen is your portrait, modeled in 3D in keeping with the standard, with health and mana gauges. While these gauges only give a indication of your remaining strength hovering the mouse over them brings up hit points so you can tell if you can survive the fight. The most important part of the GUI is in the top right of the screen as this contains not just the name of the area you're currently exploring but also a mini-map. This mini-map not only points out the local terrain but also shows enemy/ally locations (with red and blue dots) in the nearby area and has arrows pointing to the other areas you've either discovered or need to visit to complete the current quest.

What are the controls?
Arrows keys will be used to move around, the mouse will be used to interact with the environment (attack, pick up object etc)..

How does the inventory work?
The inventory will function similar to Diablo II. To pick up an item, check click on it. To use an item, (drink a potion, use a scroll etc), you just right click on it.

How will Spells work?
Blizzard has been very vague of spells, but they stated that it'll function similar to the way skills worked in Diablo II. This means that fighter classes will also have a number of skills to choose from.

What Happens when you die?
When a player dies in World of Warcraft they will reappear with all their equipment at special locations throughout the world. Players will suffer some penalty from death, but not enough to ruin their gameplay experience. I suspect that this will work similar to Asheron's Call, where a person who just died will have penalties to his skills, which he can then 'work off' by killing a few monsters. Either that or you just lose gold and will need to go back to your corpse to recollect your equipment.

How will World of Warcraft differ from other MMORPGs?
World of Warcraft will differ from other MMORPGs in many ways. One of Blizzard's main goals is to ensure that players can enjoy World of Warcraft without having to invest huge amounts of playtime. Players will be able to complete quests and experience the world at their own pace-whether it be a few hours here and there, or week-long adventuring marathons. Additionally, Blzzard's quest system will provide an enormous variety of captivating quests with story elements, dynamic events, and flexible reward systems. World of Warcraft will also feature a faster style of play, with less downtime and an emphasis on combat and tactics against multiple opponents. We also plan to incorporate several unique features, which we'll disclose throughout the course of development. .

Are there going to be Player Killers?
Yes, but Player Killers can only damage/harm other player killers. Players who do not choose to be player killers will be invulnerable to player attacks. There will also be a dedicated Player Killer Zone, such restrictions do not apply.

What Perspective will World of Warcraft Feature?
So far, Blizzard plans to include 1st and third person perspectives. You'll able to change your perspective on the fly by using the scroll wheel on your mouse. .

Background and Storyline:

What time is World of Warcraft Set in?
WoW is set 4 years after the events of Warcraft III, hence it'll need to be released after War3..

How big in the World of Warcraft?
According to Blizzard, "World of Warcraft includes the areas of Lordaeron and Azeroth, as well as other areas featured in the Warcraft universe." When suspect the 'other areas' to be those of Warcraft III, including the Night Elf homeland and Northrend, land of the undead. Player's will be able to visit many of the landmarks in previous Warcraft Gamers, such as raiding Medivh's tower or exploring the Black Morass.
