The Matriarch: Chapter III

Chapter 3: A Disturbing Presence

Onboard a Zerg Overlord, behind the huge attack force of the Zerg over Dalomir...

"My Queen, there is no way through the Protoss defenses." said Samir Duran.

"Of course there is. We just don't know it yet. How many more fleets can come to this planet?" asked the Queen of Blades.

"Not many, my Queen. Why risk taking over a planet you already took over years ago, my Queen? I thought there was nothing here." replied Duran.

"Nothing here? Of course not, there is a Xel'Naga Temple here that holds many secrets that I wish to know. My Zerg couldn't stay there because I had to mass all my Zerg for the Final battle, the one where you were not in. And I wish to know why." The Queen of Blades said with a bit of an edge to her voice.

"I was sorry for that my Queen. I had no intention of leaving, I just had some... pressing matters to attend to." replied Duran, hastily.

"Oh... and what are these "pressing matters" you are speaking of?" asked the Queen.

"I.... felt a presence, not Zerg, Protoss, or Terran, my Queen. I thought that it might be of a threat to us." replied Duran.

"So, you have felt it too. Something isn't right, Duran, once we take over this planet, I want you to search for this presence." said the Queen.

"Yes... my Queen." Duran said, he reluctantly added 'my queen' with his answer.

Duran turned and left. "Stupid Kerrigan. Just wait. When my masters give me the orders to kill you then I will happily do so myself." he said to himself quietly.

He arrived to his quarters and looked on his viewscreen. It showed a caccoon that was pulsating. "Good, my masters will be pleased. The Alpha is about to be born." he said aloud.

He turned on his private comm and spoke with his 'Masters'.

"My master, it seems the Alpha is about to be born."

"Good." a cold, menacing voice replied.

"Should I greet it?" asked Duran.

"No, we shall do the honors. You have other matters, do you not? Wait for the others to be born." replied the mysterious voice.
"Yes my masters." said Duran.

"Now remember, keep the 'one' under more greater protection."

"The one? Who do you speak of my masters?"

"The one on Antioch, the city in Auir. Without this one, this entire new civilization will not work."

"Antioch? My masters that is where most of the Protoss are at, at this time."

"If you fail Duran... you know the consequences." replied the voice that seemed to freeze Duran's heart.

"Yes my masters, I will not fail. Antioch will be under my control."

Duran turned off his comm and looked up on his viewscreen.

Back on Dalomir, in the Xel'naga temple....

"By Adun..." said an amazed Edwarg. He had never seen anything like this before. There were statues of every race that the Xel'Naga ever created made by a mysterious crystal that glowed it's respective colors. They were arranged in a line, from their first attempts to their last.

"Could this be their museum? Or a record of what they created?" Edwarg asked himself, of course no answer came back. At the end of the line was a huge statue. The upper body of the Xel'Naga made out of the same crystal one hand in the ground, the other in the air, it's palm open and...

"Could that be a Protoss?" Edwarg asked another question. He walked to the huge statue and looked up to see the Protoss warrior. Funny, he thought. The Protoss warrior had a spear in one hand and a shield in the other.

"Could this be the ancestor of our civilization?" He asked himself silently. The warrior had a nose, somewhat of a mouth, and eyes with pupils rather than the glowing eyes that they had now. Edwarg stared at the statue, amazing he thought. He turned around and saw the row of statues before him. He saw another Protoss but this one was more advanced, a Zerg Larvae, and some other creatures he had never seen in his life.

He walked down the row, and the saw that under each statue, there would be the name of the planet that the creature originated from, of course in the Xel'Naga language. Finally he reached the end and saw a Protoss Judicator or what he thought was a Judicator. The creature had a robe on, which was made of the crystal that glowed black and he could see some of the face, a Protoss face with a mouth. He looked down to see the name and instead saw a summary of the creature.
"Hybrid?" he asked himself yet again. He looked lower to read the rest of the summary to see where it originated from.

"By Adun... we are in danger..." he said. The statue read "A new creation has arisen but not made by us, but of a stronger race, which may have even created us. This is the Hybrid, One will be born on the grounds of Dalomir and the strongest will be born in the city of Antioch, on our "fallen ones'" planet. Then the others will follow."

Edwarg suddenly remembered something, that eerie presence I felt underneath me a while back, he thought. Before Mojo had interrupted him. (Back in the Prologue) He looked around to see that he couldn't find the entrance. He ran in the direction he thought he came from and ran straight into the hard, cool surface of the temple's wall.

"I must return to Auir immediately." He said to himself while looking for the way out.

Meanwhile, in Dalomir space, on a Terran Dominion science vessel...

"Sir, I have found a new..."

"Shhh..."

Nathaniel Essex was cut off by the Admiral.

"The Protoss destroyed our fleet. But now the Zerg are here. We must stay quiet." said the Admiral of the Cicones. The Cicones was a science vessel that was part of the Terran Dominion's attack fleet but the Protoss had taken out the fleet.

"But sir, it doesn't matter if--"

"Be quiet!"

Once again Nathaniel Essex was cut off. Dr. Essex was an incredibly brilliant man but at this moment he was being cut off by his incompetant admiral. He hated times like these. He knew a lot about the Zerg and knew that them being silent inside the ship wasn't going to do them any good. He yawned and stared out the viewport.

After a few silent minutes, he decided to break the silence and disobey the admiral's orders.

"Sir! The Zerg cannot detect us if we speak inside the ship!"

"Shut up, Dr. Essex."

"No I will not shut up, sir. I am the scientist here. I know more about the Zerg then you do and I suggest you listen, sir."
"Fine, but if the Zerg come he-"

"Sir! The Zerg cannot hear and see everything. They are here to take out the Protoss, not us! There is something on that planet sir. My scanners detected some kind of temple on that planet and it is emitting some kind of Psionic energy. But I have also detected some kind of other power source. My viewscreen showed a caccoon of some kind. I had secretly gone down-"

"Secretly gone down? How dare you!" interrupted the angry admiral.

"Wait, it had fought off light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation (L.A.S.E.R. get it?). That shows just how strong it is."

"You... you disobeyed my orders... not once but twice... guards I want this man in a jail cell... Now!" cried the very angry admiral.

Dr. Essex looked outside at the guard. He knew that he couldn't get out because of the force-field that kept him in his cell. The guard soon fell asleep and Dr. Essex was left in his cell alone. He quickly remembered everything he could about the ship and came up with an idea. If the Admiral wants me to die here, then I'm not going to die alone.

He cracked open one of the walls with his banna rifle. The banna rifle was a high powered small gun that he had stuck in his boot. It was incredibly useful at times. Of course the small size allowed it to be shot 2 times and he had used up one of them.

He looked through the crack to see many wires of different colors. He pulled out the blue and red wires.

"Now let's see what I can do with these." he whispered to himself.

He took off one of his gloves and after his hand came out, a small metal object fell out of the glove. He quickly picked it up and pressed a button on it. It opened up and two small pincers like objects popped out on each side of the device.

He cut the blue wire and put in on the left pincer and did the same with the red except he put the red on the right pincer. He smiled and put his glove back on.

"Hey Mr. guard! Wake up!" shouted Dr. Essex.

"Yeah wha'dya want?" asked the now awake guard.

"How's the battle going on out there?" asked Dr. Essex.

"Looks like the Zerg a winnin', why?" answered the guard.

"Good, then I guess we're next. Because the Zerg are coming!"

"What? Ha that’s a good one."

Dr. Essex smiled and grabbed the small metal object.

"You see this here? I call it a psi emitter. It sends out a huge Psionic signal that will attract the attention of the Queen herself. It's gonna bring the Zerg here. Understand?"

"Wha? Har dee har. You brainiacs. Pshhh."

Dr. Essex squeezed the metal object and it sparked. The Cicones' lights started to blink and went out.

"What the?" the now amazed guard looked around. He felt a sharp pain in his arm and soon found himself falling asleep.

"Good night, mr. guard." said Dr. Essex. He removed a needle that was in the guard's arm.
Dr. Essex walked out of his cell and looked around. The emergency doors had already gone down and there was no way out.

Out on the bridge...

"Admiral, the ship's power core just shut down sir. And the Zerg are coming our way!" shouted a cadet.

"No, this can't be happening. Do we have any weapons on this ship?" asked the admiral.

"Yes sir, just a few onboard."

"Sir, there is an overlord hailing us sir."

"An overlord? What the hell? Open a viewscreen."

"Oh well, well, well. What do we have here? Terrans? So you sent us that signal." said the Queen of Blades.

"This is the science vessel Cicones. We are only here as uh-"

"Oh shut up. I'm going to be boarding your ship. I want to use your EMP shockwave against the Protoss and I want to know what sent that huge signal."

The Overlord moved in closer to the science vessel Cicones...
