Children of War: Part IPART I
-By Mark Pessoa
It was about 16 years after the UED expedition to conquer the Zerg, Broodwar some would call it. A war that ended in glorious victory, or so people thought.
It was just another day in the life of Sebastian Cross, an 18-year-old high school student. Sebastian was about 5’7 with light brown hair, deep blue eyes, and athletic. There was one thing however about Sebastian whom no one knew anything about, hit tattoo. Sebastian has a tattoo of several strange letters or characters on the under part of his left forearm, he has no idea how they got there he just knows that they have been there for as long as he can remember. His mother says he has had them since he was born, Sebastian was also exceeding in athletics at an amazing rate, he seemed to be running his hundred meter dash faster every time, even his coaches were amazed. His Long jump and high jump were already in a class all of there own, he didn’t actually know how high or far he could jump since he would always have to stop after the others could not keep up. Most of the girls could only dream of having Sebastian as a boyfriend, but Sebastian’s eye caught only one girl, Jade Kerrigan, a beautiful blonde haired, green eyed 17 year old girl who had just transferred to Eglinton High that fall, yet she seemed to be unattainable for him, it seemed like every time he would try to start up a conversation the got interrupted, but not today, Sebastian had planed to wait until after school when she was alone and he would try to talk to her then.
Fourth period, last of the day, and Sebastian watching the clock eagerly waiting for class to end so he could catch up with Jade.
“Yo dumbass…” a voice came from behind Sebastian, “… why you so spaced out man?” Sebastian turned back to see his friend Chris.
“Oh hey man, how’s it goin’? I was just waitin’ for class to end.” Sebastian responded.
“Uh well space cadet it did, like 5 minutes ago, you’ve been sittin’ here since.”
“Shit!” Sebastian jumped up, almost knocking over his desk, “I’m gonna miss her, shit I gotta go man!”
“What the… Hey Sebastian!” Chris was saying as Sebastian ran out of the class, “Sebastian man… miss who? Who are ya gonna miss?” Chris just murmured to himself, “Damn that boys got some serious issues”
Running as fast as he could, he darted out of the school chasing after Jade, hoping she hadn’t gotten to far, but with his speed she was in sight within minutes. “Good, she’s alone” he though to himself as he slowed down to a walking pace. “JADE!” he shouted trying to catch her, she turned to see who was calling her.
“Who… Sebastian?” she answered back, “Is that you?”
“Yeah wait up.” Sebastian was just catching up to her now walking beside her. “Hey, how’s it goin’?”
“Alright I guess how about you?” she asked back.
“Good, good… uh listen, I was just wondering, uh I never got to ask you before but, would you maybe wanna get together sometime and watch a movie or somethin’?” Sebastian asked with a bit of hesitation in his voice.
“Did you run all that way just to ask me on a date?” She looked at him with a smirk,
“Run? What? I mean I didn’t run I was just walkin’ and I saw ya…” Jade cut in,
“Don’t worry it’s ok, I think it sweet.” Jade smiled up at Sebastian,
“So is that a yes?” Sebastian asked
“That is definitely a…” Just then something flew out of the sky, flying by Jade and Sebastian with such force that the wind turbulence knocked them back a few feet, as it crashed hard and fast into the ground leaving a trail of dug up dirt and broken trees and shrubs in its path as it stopped just a few hundred feet away from the two of them.
“Awh shit…” Sebastian looked down at his arm, as it was all scratched up scraping alone the ground, Jade who was unharmed had landed on Sebastian using him to cushion her fall.
“Oh sorry,” she said as she brought herself up on her feet and reached down to help up Sebastian. “What in the world was that?”
“I dunno, but I plan on finding out, it almost killed ya!” Sebastian sounding concerned.
“Hey, it almost killed you too!” she snapped back as if to say she was also concerned.
“Alright, alright, lets just go check it out” Sebastian grabbed her wrist and started leading her towards the object that came out of the sky, Jade stopped and Sebastian looked back, “Hey what the…” he questioned, just then she pulled her wrist away from him and instead of turning and running she placed her hand in his holding onto it as she smiled up at him. “… Oh.” Sebastian smiled as she held his hand and they both began walking again.
Upon reaching the object they noticed it was some sort of spacecraft,
“Wait up here ok? I don’t want anything happening to you.” Sebastian again concerned, left her up top as he descended into the small crater the craft had made.
“Hey this looks like a Terran Drop Ship!” he shouted up at Jade,
“A what?” she shouted back
“A Drop Ship, they were used in the that war a few years ago to transport Marines, Tanks, Goliaths, and others too.” He exclaimed
“Marines? Tanks? Goliaths? What the hell are you talkin’ about? How do you know so much about this?” Jade now asking questions, wondering where he had gotten all this information from because and information of the war years ago was supposed to be classified and unspoken of, kids had even gotten suspended for trying to talk about it in school.
“Yeah they were all different types of forces in the war…” Sebastian was answering back as he started walking back up to her, “… My grandmother was a pilot for a carrier, she used to tell me all kinds of stories from the war against the Zerg, she would always mention how great the Protoss were in helpin’ us in the war”
“Wow,” Jade’s eyes filled with amazement, “I’ve never heard so much about the war, tell me more?” A gleam in her eye as she begged Sebastian to fill her in on more details.
“Tell ya what, we can go down to my house later and talk to my grandmother, I’ll get her to tell ya all kinds of stories!” Sebastian said with a smile on his face, he had finally gotten to talk to her, finally made plans, finally was going to know her better, get closer to her, which was what he wanted, his train of thought however was interrupted when Jade suddenly said,
“Oh my God, the door’s opening, it’s opening!” Jade exclaimed, Sebastian then turned around and much to his amazement he saw four men in armored suits step out,
“Marines…” Sebastian let out in a silent voice to Jade, Just then two huge black machines came out, armed to the teeth walking on two legs, followed by a female,
“Those… Those are Goliaths! And the one behind them must be the pilot,” Sebastian whispered to Jade, “But what are they doing here? The was is long over.” Sebastian seemed puzzled. Jade jumped in,
“Only one way to find out!” she started walking towards the drop ship waving her arms in the air, “HEY, OVER HERE” the Goliaths and Marines both Turned guns to aim at Jade,
“HALT!” One of the Marines shouted and pointed at Jade and Sebastian, the female pilot stepped in,
“Hold your fire! They’re civilians” the pilot walked towards Sebastian and Jade. “You two, sorry ta scare ya like that, do you know of any open fields or anything like that around here?”
“Um well there is this old abandon factory about 2 miles south of here, why? What’s goin’ on? I thought that war was over.” Sebastian now angrily demanding answers.
“It is over…” the pilot responded, “… at least that is what you were to believe, knowing that the war was over and there was no more threat, humans were supposed to live normal lives, without fear or worry of the Zerg, we were able to hold them off until now, but they just seem to grow and grow, they’ve pushed us all the way back here to Earth we were knocked down by a small fleet of Mutalisks, I was to transport these soldiers to the space station orbiting around the moon, where a larger fleet was going to infiltrate the Zerg. We need to hide out now so the Zerg will leave once they see we are no longer here. So what I need from you two now is that you lead me to this factory where we can set up base for a while, and wait for reinforcements.”
“The TWO of us?” Sebastian asked, “No, no, no, you leave her outta this! I’ll lead you to the factory let her go.”
“Let her go?” the pilot asked, “We have no intentions on holding you hostage, but if you wish to live then you must both come with us, if the Zerg pick up your scent here they will follow you where ever you go.”
“Fine,” Sebastian snapped back, “But she stays with me at all times.”
“Alright, now show us to the factory quickly!” the pilot said with a firm tone in her voice, and with that note, Sebastian and Jade walking ahead of the pack, holding hands, led the group through some back fields and deserted areas, to attract little or no attention, to the old abandon factory.
“There…” Sebastian pointed to an old broken down building, “… that’s the factory, can we go now?”
“Go? Where are you gonna go boy? No matter wut those damn Zerg is gonna find ya, you better off stickin’ with us” one of the marines chuckled back.
“It’s ok Sebastian, I’m not afraid, besides I wanna learn more about the war ‘n’ all, so I don’t mind stayin’” Jade said with a clam tone in her voice as she looked up at Sebastian.
“Alright, lets get inside ‘n’ find cover before these damn Zerg come huntin’ for us.” A marine exclaimed. The group walked inside the looking for a good place to set up while they waited for reinforcements.
“Here…” a marine exclaimed, “… these two walls look strong e’nough to hold anythin’ out and we can focus our attacks forward if needed.” As they began to set up Sebastian and Jade moved aside a bit.
“Don’t worry we’ll get outta this kay?” Sebastian looked down at Jade in means of comfort,
“I know, and don’t worry I’m not afraid or anything…” a marine suddenly cut in,
“You, boy, come here and give us a hand would ya?”
“Sebastian! My name is Sebastian Cross, not ‘boy’” Sebastian Snapped back.
“Well Sebastian Cross…” the marine was responding in a somewhat of a mocking voice, “Ma name is ‘I don’t give a shit’, now that we’ve been properly introduced you wanna give us a hand?!”
“I’ll be right back Jade.” Sebastian then turned and walked over to the marines, “alright… so what do you want me to do?”
“Here take some of this stuff and pile it up there,” the marine pointing to some pieces of metal and then pointed over in front of them to a pile of stacked up metal, “were gonna use these here as a sort of wall slowin’ down the Zerg so we stand a ghost of a chance…” just then another marine cut in,
“Heh, a ghost, wish we had one of them round here now, could come in handy.”
“Wait! We got some ghost equipment back in the Drop Ship…” the pilot exclaimed, “Nuthin’ fancy, but we got canister round a gun and the basic cloaking pack, we could equip the boy… I mean Sebastian with it and he could help out with the defense, what do ya say Sebastian?”
“I dunno, I’ve never handled a gun or anything like that…” Sebastian was saying with hesitation,
“The ‘boy’ couldn’t handle that equipment anyways” one of the marines cut in.
“What do you know? Yeah I could! Better than you probably!” Sebastian shouted back in desperation to not be under minded in front of Jade.
“Alright, enough you two!” the pilot shouted, “You, Wallace…” she pointed at the marine who had made fun of Sebastian, “Go with him back to the Drop ship, get him equipped and cloak him, and get back here ASAP! We should be done by the time you get back.”
“Try to keep up ‘boy’” Wallace smirked, and ran over the wall of metal and outside, but before anyone else could look back at Sebastian he was gone running too.
Wallace ahead of Sebastian running towards the Drop ship looks back and could see him catching up to him quickly, “Hmm he’s pretty fast” Wallace thought to himself, but before he knew it Sebastian was running along beside him and looked over to him and said,
“I think you miss judged me, I a’int no ‘boy’”
“Maybe so,” the marine replied, “but you also a’int got no Stim Packs” Wallace hit a little red button on his suit, releasing pure adrenaline into his body and taking off like a ground rocket. Sebastian also noticed that he was running much faster than he thought he could, he knew the Stim packs made the marines twice as fast and yet he was still catching up to Wallace. Once again Sebastian was nearing Wallace, only this time did not run along beside him, instead he flew by him leaving Wallace in his dust.
“What the? How the hell is that kid runnin’ that fast? I’ve already had to use my Stim pack twice to stay ahead fer this long.” Wallace started thinking.
Back at the Factory while the marines were busy fixing a defensive wall to slow the Zerg, the pilot noticed Jade sitting by herself and walked over to her, “Hello, I’m really sorry for all of this,” the pilot started saying as she crouched beside Jade, “My name’s Teri Smythe, everyone round here just calls me Tessi… Jade, right?”
“Hey Tessi, yeah Jade… Jade Kerrigan, please to meet…”Jade reached over to shake Tessi’s hand, but Tessi jumped back scared,
“K… Kerrigan? I’m sorry did you say Kerrigan?” Tessi asked with fear in her voice.
“Yeah, what… what’s wrong with my name?” Jade asked wondering why Tessi was so afraid.
“It a’int your name she’s scared of hun,” a marine replied, “it’s where ya came from, and yer the reason we crash landed here”
“What…?” Jade now speechless
“Poor girl, she don’t even know who her ancestors are” another marine said before Tessi began to speak again.
“Jade, you’re the reason the Zerg have advanced this far, you’re what they’re after…”
“I don’t get it” Jade interrupted, with her head down
“You will,” Tessi said, “You see, during the war a few years back, the one your supposed to know nothing about, there was a Telepath, Sarah Kerrigan, she was also a ghost and an allie, a great allie at that, but she was captured by the Zerg and infested, they twisted her mind so, that she believed the Zerg were the only future she saw, she became so consumed with power that it led to her ultimate destruction, but not before she spawned some offspring, most of them dies with her killed before they matured, but Jim Raynor, a Marshall who had a soft sport for Kerrigan still believed that there was some good in her helped Kerrigan get one of her offspring, a girl out of the way and safely to earth where she could live a normal life… that girl was you…” Jade cut in,
“But my father’s name is Jim… is he?”
“You learn quickly” Tessi began up again, “Jim took you in as his daughter, settled down on Earth and never looked back, hoping to forget all that had happened, the Zerg still believe that only a spawn of Kerrigan can ever rule over them again and they will stop at nothing to get you, and we were supposed to stop at nothing to stop them. But they have advanced this far, we could only hold them off so much, no I fear for our lives and yours and Sebastian’s.” Tessi looked down in shame
“Don’t worry, we’ll pull through, Sebastian is gonna help us too, I can feel it” Jade smiled at Tessi. Tessi stood up and started to walk back to the marines,
“Hang tight Jade, we’ll get you out of this.” Tessi spoke with a firm confidence in her voice. Jade still sitting alone now pondering what her life would be like now, she was practically half Zerg, and who… who was her father, so many questions raced through her head while she blankly looked up into the dark worn down ceiling of the old factory. Tessi had started to whisper to the marines, “She was saying she could ‘feel it’ she could feel that we were gonna get outta this and that that ‘boy’, Sebastian, was gonna help us, I mean Kerrigan, well Sarah, was a ghost, and a Telepath, maybe Jade has gained some of her telepathic abilities, she may be able to see into the future, or even into our minds…” one of the marines cut in,
“Just wut are ya sayin’ Tessi? She could be dangerous?”
“No, no, no, nothing like that, I think she has Sarah’s heart, mind and soul in her, which are all good, she lived here not knowing anything of the past, which was good, she just might have taken after her mother if so, and we don’t need another enemy like Sarah Kerrigan, trust me I know!” Tessi was now speaking a little bit louder,
“Shh, she’ll hear us,” One of the marines whispered, the Tessi just answered back,
“She probably already knows what we’re talkin’ about…” she was interrupted by Jade’s voice,
“Tessi… It’s ok…” Tessi and the other marines looked up at Jade, “… You don’t have to be afraid, I’m not gonna go crazy or anythin’…”
“Alright, there ya go ‘boy’, all set up…” Sebastian and Wallace had reached the drop ship, and were preparing to leave as soon as Sebastian was equipped,
“I told ya, my name is Sebastian!” Sebastian snapped back,
“Alright, alright, I get it, Sebastian Cross, yes you told me once b’fore member… I’ll just call ya Cross, that ok with you?” Wallace asked as if in a apologetic tone,
“Yeah that’s fine with me…” Sebastian answered, but was cut off before he could finish,
“Can I ask ya something Cross?” Wallace looked at him,
“Well yeah, I guess… what is it?” Sebastian seemed concerned as he noticed a certain serious tone in Wallace’s voice,
“Well… how’d you run by me that fast? I was usin’ my Stim pack and was already runnin’ 25mph, then next thing I know you flew by me, doin’ over 30mph, how is that possible? You got some kinda Stim pack of yer own er somthin’?” there was a silent pause between the two of them, then Sebastian spoke,
“No, nothin’ like that,” he paused, “I don’t know how I was running that fast, I mean I’m on the track team, but I’ve never ran ‘that’ fast, something just came over me, I guess I was just kinda pissed at how you were treating me, ya know like a ‘boy’ and I dunno I just took off…” he paused again and looked up at Wallace, “It’s weird ya know, these past few months I have noticed I have been getting’ faster, stronger… but I’ve never told anyone about it, I just thought I was workin’ really hard at it.”
“Hmm..” Wallace glanced up in thought, “Well this is getting’ weird for ya, I can tell, so lets just head back to the factory b’fore it’s too late”
“Alright,” Sebastian looked to the door of the drop ship and smiled, “You wanna race?” he asked jokingly and smirked,
“Lets just run long side each other, I’m still recuperatin’ from my Stim pack injections.” Wallace laughed as they both jogged out the drop ship door and headed back to the factory, now in happier spirits then when they had departed.
“Hold on a sec!” A marine blurted out, “Tessi, how do ya know so much bout all this? There’s sumthin’ ya a’int tellin’ us a’int there?” Before Tessi could respond Jade began to speak,
“A Medic… you were a medic back during the war… I can feel you, healing, saving lives…”
Tessi was amazed at how Jade knew this, “How did you…” Tessi paused for a brief second then spoke up, “The Zerg… it must be the Zerg, the closer they get, the more her powers develop, she can sense my past… yes I was a medic, I was right there second line in behind Raynor, and his squad as they went up against, Sarah and her swarm, she was so destructive, she could easily take out a group of four or five marines in a few single blows and showed no remorse, I couldn’t take no more of it all the killing on the field so I became a drop ship pilot, I’d be in and out of battle within a matter or minutes, not having to watch all that brutality, and I saw…” a tear came to Tessi’s eyes as she spoke, “I saw those men dying, begging for help, and I could do nothing I had the power to help, but didn’t…”
“Don’t worry none Tessi, ya did what ya could, if ya had helped ya wouldn’a been here with us now, cause Kerrigan would’a taken ya out too.” One of the marines said trying to comfort Tessi, as he placed a hand on her back, then she spoke up,
“Thanks Tucker,” Tessi started wiping her tears with her hand, “Now lets finish settin’ up here before those two get back, or before the Zerg get here…” but before she could finish her sentence they heard something fly by, fast, above the factory and then heard it disappear off in the distance,
“It’s the Zerg, I’m pickin’ em up on my sensors, at least 10 of em. We only got 3 Marines n two Goliaths, if Wallace and the ‘boy’ don’t come back soon were in for it.” One of the marines started to say before Tucker spoke up,
“Get a grip Beni, we’ve been in worse, we all know how to handle this, no get into your positions before we get rushed.” Tucker pointed to various corners and hiding spots within firing range of the main doors, then he turned to Jade and Tessi, “You two stay back behind that stock pile there, Carter’ll watch over ya.” The two girls climbed back in behind the pile of metal out of site, as Beni and Tucker ran to their posts in preparation for the attack, the two Goliaths both behind the first wall of scrap metal, about 75 feet from each other for a head on attack at any Zerg coming in through the doors, as Tucker took the left side, hiding behind some more metal about 50 feet from the door, for a clean side attack, while Beni climbed a bit higher for a secure attack down on the Zerg on the right side, Carter and the girls in behind the Goliaths for a secured position and with little cross fire coming their way.
“1200 feet and closing in fast!” Beni whispered over the intercoms, “It looks like nuthin’ but zerglin’s rushin’ at us, this ain’t gonna be fun, I hate close range attacks”
“Quit yer whinin’” Tucker’s voice came over the intercom, “I’m only pickin’ up about eight of em’ the five of us can easily take ‘em.”
Suddenly the sounds of the Zerg could be heard, their feet stopping the ground as they approached faster and faster, ill mannered creatures with a one track mind. All that could be seen was the dust coming up from the fields as they got closer, ‘what a horrible sound’, Jade thought to herself as her and Tessi were as close to the ground as they could get, not to bee seen. Dead silence came over the factory and it’s dusty surroundings, the dust created by the Zerg was slowly floating into the factory leaving a thin layer of soot over everything,
“Hey… where’d they go?” Beni spoke in a silent voice, but before anyone could answer, Three Zergling emerged from the ground right in front of the goliath on the right attacking the legs of the machine furiously until they were able to disengage it’s movement,
“FIRE!!!” Tucker shouted, spinning his body around and aiming at the three small critters not holding anything back. Beni, peering over his higher ground opening fire on the zerglings, as the second goliath turned to aim for them as well. With guns blazing noisily Jade looked up to catch a glimpse of this all, Carter was crouched down keeping low hitting the zerg with everything he had. Another group of Zerglings entered the factory this time head on. The first Goliath was out of commission as the pilot scampered over to the second one for cover. The first three zerglings now lay waste as the second Goliath had manage to get in a good number of rounds into them and was now concentrating on the five coming in through the main doors. Tucker and Beni aided each other by targeting one Zergling at a time wearing them down, but also wearing them selves down with the Stim Packs, suddenly a voice came over the intercom,
“Did ya miss me boys? YEE HAWWW!!” Wallace came in, gun blazing extreme fire at the Zerglings, Sebastian was no-where in sight, but the team knew he was there, they could see the scattered canister shots landing near the Zerg, but barely making contact. “Yer aim’s gotta get better Cross” Wallace said amusingly. The Zerglings had split into smaller groups, two attacking at the second goliath’s legs, one going directly for Tucker, but was easily warded off with aid from Wallace, while the other two were going for Beni, scampering up the stock pile of metal but were shot down by the Goliath as Tucker and took care of the Zerglings at the goliaths feet. Jade stood up as the factory became silent, multiple creatures lay dead and mutilated all over the factory’s scruffy floors and all over the scrap metals, an image which burned a place in the back of her mind so she could never forget the horrors she just saw.
“Are… are those…” Jade stuttered as she talked, “are those the zergs?”
“Hell those are just your basic low life zerglin’” Tucker responded back at her, “They get much bigger n’ that hun.”
“Hey Tucker? Didn’t ya say ya picked up at least ten Zerg flyin’ in?” Beni asked with a degree of fear in his voice. “Cause I can feel the ground shakin’”
“What the…” Wallace turned around to look outside, two massive creatures approaching their encampment at a steady pace. “What I wouldn’t give fer a tank right about now… ULTRALISK’S!!!” Wallace shouted.
