Brain of Khalim:

Recommended Level: 21-25
Quest Given By: Cain
Location: Flayer Dungeon
Difficulty: Moderately Hard
Reward: None
Main Objectives: Retrieve Khalim’s Brain

Introduction:
Having low hit points and high damage makes Undead Flayers the ideal targets of Iron Maiden

The Brain of Khalim is the second part of the quest ‘Khalim’s Will.” Located in the Flayer dungeon, it is difficult, but shouldn’t take too long to complete. Fire and Poison resistance are helpful in the completion of this quest.

You should have found the entrance to the Flayer Dungeon in our previous mission guide. If not, search around where the Gidbinn was; it will be located somewhere in close proximity.

Navigating the Flayer Dungeon:
As you would expect from its name, the Flayer dungeon contains mostly Flayers. There’s also one new type of Flayer, the Undead Flayer. These tiny skeletons are fast and deadly, as well as being a little tougher than their living counterparts. You’ll be thankful that all undead Flayers attack with melee weapons and there are no undead shamans. Despite this, treat Undead Flayers with outmost caution, and never get yourself surrounded.

The Water Watchers, while being tough, are extremely vulnerable to Chain Lightning

Other monsters you might face in the dungeon include Soul Killers, Gloom Bats and Water Watchers. Water Watchers are giant serpents that live in stagnant pools within the dungeon. When you venture near, they’ll rear up from the water and send bolts of poison flying your way. These guys are tough, but their poison won’t do much if you have antidote potions around. Lightning Damage works the best against the serpents. Gloom Bats are weak, and won’t be a problem.

The biggest threat however, is still the Flayers. It is foolish to rush into a room filled with them. Instead lead them into confined passageways, so you can deal with each on it’s own. The Shamans pose the most threat, shoot them down on sight.

In this fashion slowly make your way through each level. The Flayer dungeon consists of three separate levels of moderate size. The glowing chest that holds Khalim’s brain is located somewhere on the third level. It is guarded by a horde of Flayers as well as a leading hero, Witch Doctor Endugu.

Securing the Brain:
You’ll know when you fighting ‘Witch Doctor Endugu’ when the everything around you erupts in flames.

’Witch Doctor Endugu’ is deadly, and his Shamans minions only make things harder. The best idea here is to use a range weapon to lead them outside then retreat. You should be able to single them out through the twisting passageways so each can be dealt with alone. The Witch Doctor himself is Magic Resistant and fire Enchanted, making him also invulnerable to fire and 75% resistant to all other elemental attacks.

When you fight the Witch Doctor, take care. Mages will find certain death if they venture into the range of his Inferno. Instead stand back to launch spells or use minions. While this may take a while to kill him, it’s certainly better than dying. Warriors should generally use missile weapons, but some classes have other options (see below).

Once the Witch Doctor is dead, you won’t have many problems clearing the rest of dungeon. The glowing chest will contain various magic items along with Khalim’s Brain. Launch a portal to town and talk to Cain. Half of Quest 3 is now complete.

Class Specific Tips:

It is a good idea for you to let your minions to the work here. Make sure you have a Blood Golem around at all times, followed by a few skeletal mages. Aid your minions in combat with Iron Maiden followed by Corpse Explosion.

When fighting the Witch Doctor, your best bet is to curse him with Amplify Damage. Launch Bone Spear into the battle to quicken his death.

Glacial Spike provides the perfect way to counter the Flayers' high speed.

Your best defense against the Flayers is Chilling Armor. Its ability to launch Ice Bolts at whoever strikes you is deadly against the Flayer Darters. It slows them and sometimes even kills them outright. Use glacial spike as your primary spell against the Flayers, continuous strikes will send your foes into icy oblivion. Switch to chain lightning against the Water Watchers, a single strike will kill several.

When taking on the Witch Doctor, Use Glacial Spike to shatter all surrounding shamans, then retreat as the boss charges as you. By slowing him with Glacial Spike, you should be able to kill the Witch Doctor without him ever reaching you, although it might take a while.

Whenever you see Flayers or Soul Killers, charge headlong into the fray with a howl. This will disrupt their ranks enough for you to knock down isolated darters. Use Leap Attack to destroy the Shamen before they can incinerate you. When fighting the Witch Doctor, it is probably best for you to use two pairs of throwing axes. However you can also engage him in melee if you got enough healing potions available.

Charge in with Zeal as primary attack and Thorns as your Aura. Fire Resistance Aura works well against the Shamans Inferno, so keep both Auras on hotkeys. When you arrive at the "Brain Chest" room, keep the Fire Resistance Aura on if you have a few points in it. Use Vengeance or Sacrifice, depending on which works best for you, as your primary attack. Take out the Minions first, then, carefully attack the Witch Doctor. Make sure your belt is full of Health Potions when taking them out, and a few Mana Potions are in your inventory.

Slow Missiles becomes one of the best spells to use here, allowing you to dodge the Flayer’s darts with impunity. Use Exploding Arrow against a mass of Flayers if you’re a bow Amazon. Lightning Bolt is also good against the Water Watches.

When you face the Witch Doctor, kill the shamans from a distance and slow the boss with Cold attacks. As long as he can’t reach you, you can’t die.
