The Heart of Khalim:
Recommended Level: 22-26
Quest Given By: Cain
Location: Upper Kurast
Difficulty: Moderate
Reward: None
Main Objectives: Retrieve Khalim’s Heart
|
Introduction:
The Heart of Khalim is located within the Kurast sewers, which are below both the Kurast Bazaar and Upper Kurast. While there are four entrances to the sewers (two for each area), it’s easiest to enter via Kurast Bazaar. By now you should have explored the Bazaar and retrieved the tome for Alkor.
 |
| While horrors were tough back in Act II, they are no longer a threat. |
You’ll be fighting plenty of monsters that deal Poison damage, so stock your belt of antidote potions. Take the waypoint to Kurast Bazaar and search the rest of the area if you haven’t yet found an entrance to the sewers.
Navigating the Sewers:
The Sewers consist of two levels: the first is random and quite large, and the second is preset and very small in size. Search through the first level of the sewers; it features a complex of narrow streams and bridges.
The monsters that inhabit the sewers include Horadrim Ancients (tougher Unravelers), Horrors, Gloombats, Undead Flayers and Stygian Watchers (tougher Water Watchers). The horrors are simple, and often can’t reach you due to streams in the way. The Horadrim Ancients are barely tougher than the Unravelers in Act 2, and will be no match for your increased skills. Gloombats are fast, but have little hit points while Undead Flayers can be killed the same way as their living counterparts.
 |
| Riftwing is an elusive monster, often disappearing completely via teleportation. With all the gloombats bunched up in one spot, Bone Spear is an ideal spell. |
The Stygian watchers are the most dangerous monsters here, they are quite tough and can launch deadly poison at range. However these serpents are particularly vulnerable to lightning, so any lightning-based attack is much preferred.
The entrance to Level 2 is guarded by a unique Gloombat, Icehawk Riftwing. He’s cold enchanted and can teleport, providing extra resistance to cold spells and a cold attack. Use area of effect skills to kill his minions. Icehawk himself is fairly weak and will prove to be no problem for fighters. Mages should weaken him with spells before engagement. Once he’s dead, activate the sewer lever. The entrance to level 2 will appear.
Taking of the Heart:
Level 2 of the sewers is small, a typical and most common layout is shown on the right. Dried Corpses, Undead Flayers and Stygian Watchers guard the chest. Take care not to get too near to the pool, so that you can lead out all the monsters beside the pool. Destroy as many as them as possible first before venturing further. This will save you from dodging all the Poison Bolts that those giant serpents will launch at you.
Once you’re halfway around the pool, all the serpents will emerge. Antidote potions here are extremely helpful. The best things against these serpents are lightning-based spells or attacks, although any other missile attack will be helpful. Once they are disposed of, proceed to the glowing chest. Inside is Khalim’s Heart.
When exiting the sewers, you can easily take the original route or a different exit. Take care though, as two of them will lead you to Upper Kurast, and you’ll need to find its waypoint if you wish to save your progress. Talk to Cain to complete the quest. Now there’s just one item left to collect: the flail.
Class Specific Tips:
 |
 |
| Amplify Damage helps the Necromancer cause serious carnage. |
Amplify Damage and Skeleton Mages are great throughout the sewers. These will allow you to quickly kill Flayers, Horrors or Horadrim Ancients that are standing behind a gutter of stream. Once one dies, Corpse Explosion will kill the rest. You’ll often find your minions stuck here and it may also pay to resummon your Blood Golem so it’s right next to the enemies. A Blood Golem and Iron Maiden is all you need to kill Riftwing.
The Stygian Watchers are much harder, as whenever they submerge, your curses are no longer in effect. You’ll need to have a Blood Golem replenishing your life while you shoot Bone Spears into their midst. While the going is slow, they’ll die eventually.

 |
| Stygian Watchers are totally vulnerable to lightning, here a Sorceress exploits the weakness. |
Glacial Spike is your primary spell throughout the Sewers. It can shatter a dozen Horrors in a hit and Send Flayers and Ancients to oblivion. The spikes are equally effective against all but the boss Gloombat. When fighting against Riftwing, use Glacial Spike to kill his minions, then Target Icewing with Lightning Bolts or Fireballs. You’ll find that the bat is physically quite weak, and even physical attacks will kill it.
The Stygian Watchers are formidable opponents if you don’t use the correct spells. However Chain Lightning is simply deadly against them. With a few shots, all the Serpents guarding the Khalim’s Heart will be dead.
|
 |
Leap Attack is the Barbarian's best friend, it’ll allow you to jump over the gutters and face those cowardly ancients. Have double swing as your primary attack to deal heavy damage. When fighting the Stygian Serpents, simply charge at them full force.
|
|
The Kurast Sewers is large, but simple for a paladin. Use Zeal as your primary attack and thorns as your aura for the most part. The Stygian Watchers can be a hassle, either run past them, or try to get in close enough to hit them. Bridges can be used to you're advantage to stop from being surrounded, and for one on one duals.
|
|
The Amazon will have no problem navigating the sewers, simply use arrows to pick off all the monsters that are on other sides of the gutters. Use Ice Arrows on monsters crossing the bridges, sending them into a traffic jam. Use Exploding arrows for heavy damage.
When you face the Stygian Watchers, Lightning Bolt is the vest way to go. As long as you aim correctly, your bolt will travel through several serpents.
