The Dark Ranger

Version: Retail V1.12
Game Type: Any
Suggested Maps: Any
Recommended Heroes: Dark Ranger
Recommended Skill Level: 5-15
Editor: Nightmyre

One of the more interesting neutral heroes that was introduced with TFT is the Dark Ranger. Possessing an auto-summon spell, an anti-magic spell, a self-healing spell, and a recastable possession, from simply looking at its arsenal, one would assume that the Ranger would be an incredibly powerful hero. And infact, ingame she is quite powerful, however somewhat less so due to her low HP. Still, she can be used quite effectively, if you can micro well enough.

The best way to use her is to focus fire on enemy units with black arrow and ranged units of your own. Melee units work, however ranged units have the advantage of being able to bring more firepower onto a single unit faster. This has the double bonus of not only killing their unit faster, but giving you an additional meatshield with which to protect your own ranged units.

The other uber spell that the Ranger has is silence. Capable of single-handedly shutting down the enemy casters, this spell has incredible power if used properly. This is especially useful with necromancers, as their skeletons and cripple can be avoided dispellage by silencing the enemy anti-magic users. With Human, you can protect your water elementals from dispelling, or even using Beastmaster and protecting those bears.

Life Drain is a good looking skill, on paper, however it rarely ever comes in handy ingame, for the simple reason that keeping your primary hero stationary simply invites them to murder it, and that the other two skills are far more useful.

Charm of course, is an unbelieveably useful spell, not only in that you can steal enemy powerhouse units, but you can also steal very useful neutral units like Ogre Mages or Gnoll Overlords. Use it whenever you can, it never ever hurts you to do so.

Recommended Skill Distribution:

Arrow/Silence/Arrow/Silence/Silence/Charm/Arrow

One interesting tactic that you can use is to take advantage of critters. Slaughter the poor sheep, and you get a free unit for each one. Helps to raise a couple of units before heading on the offensive, or if you're trying to flee an enemy, getting a couple to block him might help.
