Mission 6: Black Rock and Roll too
Difficulty: Average
Heroes: Arthas, Kel'Thuzad
Significant Items: Claws of Attack +9, Ring of Protection +3, Sobi Mask, Periapt of Vitality
Side Quests: Kill all the Orc Heroes
|
Provided you use the right units and micro, this level is surprisingly easy after a few difficult ones against the elves. Frost Wyrms are your key to victory, and they'll be practically all that you build, coupled with your heroes, a group of 7 Frost Wyrms can take on almost any defense.
You'll find that this is a game that has many more clashes than previous ones, you'll be attacked on multiple sides, while trying to attack someone else at the same time. It is quite possible you will lose half of your main base during the mission, but that isn't too important. Provided you have enough expansions for gold and you can build Frost Wyrms, you can win.
I highly recommend doing the optional quest, it gives Arthas the boost he needs so that he can survive on the two harder missions that will follow.
Hero Development Guide:
Arthas and Kel'Thuzad will rise to Level 7 Suggested choices for Skills:
Arthas:
Level 7: Level 3 Death Coil, Level 2 Death Pact, Level 1 Endurance Aura, Raise Dead
Kel'Thuzad:
Level 6: Level 2 Frost Nova, Level 3 Frost Armor, Level 1 Dark Ritual, Raise Dead
Preparations:
Stay on no upkeep for the first part of the game, you'll find that you can't built any units since you start with 40 supply, but don't worry. Your goal to save gold so you can pump out Frost Wyrms quickly later on. Build second Graveyard on the lower left of your base, get your ghouls to harvest the trees near it. You don't want to harvest the trees that expose your Gold Mine. Build four spirit towers just above your Town Hall, and another fight on the right side of your base.
The enemy will attack with a Blademaster, use the same base defense tactics with your Meat Wagon as I described in the previous mission. This way the enemy charges into the center of your base and can be hit by all your spirit towers, rather than just the ones stations on one side.
Upgrade Creature attack and carapace immediately as fast as you can. Upgrade to keep, build a Slaughter House, Altar of Darkness and upgrade to Black Citadel. Get two Boneyards to pump out frost Wyrms. Meanwhile, you need to even the odds by killing some Orcs, the easiest is the Blockrock Scouts on the bottom left.
Micro-management:
Before we continue, here's a crash course on micro-management with a Death Knight and a Lich. Group all of your units with the Death Knight, so he can heal them all quickly. When you engage in combat, use the Lich to cast Frost Armor on the Death Knight and any other unit the enemy attacks. At level 3, the spell gives an extra 7 armor, which can make your Death Knight almost invulnerable to attack! Keep the Death Knight's mana for raise death and healing your troops, and use the Frost Lich to damage groups of enemy, preferable missile troops with Frost Nova. You can also cast Frost armor on yourself.
When you get Frost Wyrms, Frost Armor them as well. These dudes have 1100 hp, and an excellent for Death Coil healing. If you keep a sharp eye on wyrms that are at yellow health, they won't die with a Death Knight around.

| Lure out the Blademaster that guards the base and destroy him. |
Destroying Base A:
You can do this while on no upkeep. Build Spirit Towers outside their base just like previous missions, lead them out with Gargolyes and let them waste their defenses on the towers. Cast Raise Dead to resurrect their troops, and you get an instant army. Get your Frost Lich to cast Frost Armor on your Death Knight and frost Wyrm them move him back for defense. Take your Wyrm, 1 Meat Wagon, your Dread Lords and attack, try leading his Blademaster to your Spirit Towers to kill him.
The base itself is weak, and Arthas will be able to destroy it, just make sure your wyrm and Meat Wagon does not die. Expand there.
Destroying Base B:
The base at B is more heavily defended, you'll need Frost Wyrms, pump them out like mad, and make sure they're on 3/3. Research their Frost Breath and your set. Wait for any enemy attack, destroy it and raise all the raiders to your command. These guys rule at taking out buildings. Attack the enemy at B with all you've got.
Use the micromanagement tips mentioned above, target the towers with your Raiders. Set the Frost Wyrms on general attack move so they freeze the towers and annihilate the troops. Make sure Arthas has Frost Armor for protection. With Arthas sucking the damage, your Frost Wyrms and blow everything to the next world. Take over and expand hear. The enemy actually attacks this expansion, so you need 4 Spirit Towers as well.
Base Defense:
The enemy will start attacking more violently, continue doing the Meat Wagon trick, but you need to send your heroes back to defend against attacks. Their raiders are especially good at taking out towers, so you need to distract them with your Meat Wagon. Death Coil works well on enemy warlocks, and Raise Dead will always turn the tide of battle.
The enemy will also attack with 2 Red Dragons now and again, beware, these guys are deadly and immune to spells! Take them out with Wyrms, but make sure Arthas is there is heal. Fully upgraded, four Frosty Wyrms can just beat two red dragons without support, but with support you can win without losses.

| The Red Dragon is the only creature that can best your Frost Wyrms, destroy them quickly. |
Securing the Map:
Now it is not to secure all areas of the map. Begin by destroying the base at C from below, and make sure you maintain 70 supply worth of Frost Wyrms (ie: have around 7 on them). This base is better defended than the two previous, and you'll need reinforcement Wyrms to win. They have a Level 6 Far Seer, make sure you kill him first. Death Coil and Frost Nova work well against him. Cast Frost Nova on enemy Head Hunters, and Frost Armor on important units as before.
Take out the Red Dragon and his whelps at D, gain a Periapt of Vitality. Take out the Ice Troll Warlord using Frost Wyrms at F, use a Meat Wagon to blast through the tree. Gain a Sobi Mask. Kill the Red Dragon at H to get a Claw of Attack +9. Launch an attack against the base at E. Provided you replenish your Frost Wyrms, the same tactics will prove victorious.
Finally, attack the camp that guards the Demon Gate, this will difficult and suggest getting 90 supply worth of Frost Wyrms. You may need two attacks to win due to the fact that have Red Dragons guardian their base. The first should be able to destroy their level 8 Blade Master Hero, the second their base.
I only have one caution, use the Frost Wyrms to freeze their Dragon Roost as soon as possible. With it dead, the enemy can no longer build Red Dragons, and your victory is secure. During the attack, you may wish to trade a Frost Wyrm for Four Gargolyes, these guys can tear up the Red Dragons. At any rate, you'll win
