As in any MMORPG, one of the most important decision that you can make is what class you're going to be. For, levelling a character in World of Warcraft will require weeks, even months of investment, and there's nothing worth than to reach the level cap, only to realise that you find your class boring, gimped, or a mixture of the two. Ideally, you want a class that suits your playstyle, and one that excels at what you like doing.

It is then ironic that a player makes this choice when he is most uninformed. While you can make guesses that a Warrior is a tank, a Priest is a healer and a Mage does damage, there are some notable exceptions. For instance, did you know that Shadow Priests actually deal damage faster than a mage? Or that a Druid will almost always be the primary healer in groups? And which class is best for soloing, which is the best for getting groups and which best for PvP? So many things to consider!

To make it easy, we at Infoceptor have written up comprehensive overviews for each of the class in World of Warcraft! Be sure to read them:

Quick Comparison::

For ease of comparison, we present to you the table featuring the advantages and disadvantages of each class.

Choosing Your Race:

The race you are will have a much less significant effect on your play style in comparison to your choice of class, and thus should be secondary choice, after you've decided on which class you want to be. World of Warcraft is not D&D, and play counter intuitive class combinations will not gimp your character in the long term.

Each race has slightly different starting attributes, and a different set of four racial abilities. The starting attributes will be far outweighed by items you carry and the attributes you gain per level that it becomes meaningless after about Level 20. It's only the racial abilities that'll you'll carry on forever.

So when deciding on your race, you should consider the following (in order)

  • Which faction do I wish to be in?
  • Can this race be my class?
  • Does my class benefit from the racial talents of this race?
  • Would I enjoy the starting area of this particular race?
  • Can my class make use of the starting attributes?

For casual players, starting areas will be probably more important than racial talents. Without adieu, we provide you with a table to make these decisions.  Here:

x - The Race cannot be the Class
1 - The Race is poor for the Class, you will have a significant disadvantage
2 - The Race is not too suited for the Class, you'll have a slight disadvantage that'll go away at high levels
3 - The Race is decent for the class
4 - The Race is suited for the class, you'll have a slight advantage.
5 - The Race is very good for the class, you'll have a significantly easier time
